(Ring of Fire over Monument Valley)
{lamp/}原文:{mtitle title="Ring of Fire over Monument Valley"/}Image Credit &Copyright:Tunc Tezel(TWAN)Explanation: Tracking along a narrow path, the shadow of anew moonwill race across North, Central, and South America,on October 14.When viewed from the shadow path the apparent size of thelunar disk will not quite completely cover the Sun though.Instead, the moon in silhouette will appear duringthe minutes of totality surrounded by a fiery ring,an annular solar eclipse more dramatically known as aring of fire eclipse. This striking time lapse sequence from May of 2012illustrates the stages of a ring of fire eclipse. From before eclipse start until sunset, they are seen over the iconicbuttes of planet Earth'sMonument Valley.Remarkably, the October 14 ring of fire eclipse will alsobe visible over Monument Valley, beginning aftersunrise in the eastern sky.

(Geminids and the Mittens)
{lamp/}原文:{mtitle title="Geminids and the Mittens"/}Image Credit &Copyright:Chuck DerusExplanation: Asteroid 3200 Phaethon'sannualgift to planet Earthalways arrivesin December.Otherwise known asthe Geminid meteor shower, the source of the meteroid stream isdust shed along the orbit of themysterious asteroid.Near the December 13/14 peak of the shower's activity, geminid meteors are captured in this night skyscape, composited from 22 images of starry skytaken before the moon rose overMonument Valleyin the American southwest. The bright stars near the position of the shower's radiantare the constellation Gemini's twin starsCastor (blue) and Pollux (yellow). As Earth sweeps through the dusty stream, the parallel meteor trails appear to radiate from a pointon the sky in Gemini due to perspective, and so the yearly shower is named for the constellation. From the camera's perspective, this view of three prominentbuttes across Monument Valley also suggests appropriate names fortwo of them. The third one is calledMerrick Butte.

(Road to the Galactic Center)
[2021年10月25日:通往银河中心的路-(Road to the Galactic Center)--原图下载](https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/2110/MonumentValleyRoad_Abramyan_2048.jpg"onMouseOver="if (document.images)document.imagename1.src='image/2110/MonumentValleyRoad_Abramyan_960_annotated.jpg';"onMouseOut="if (document.images)document.imagename1.src='image/2110/MonumentValleyRoad_Abramyan_960.jpg';){mtitle title="通往银河中心的路"/}Image Credit & Copyright: Michael Abramyan说明: 前往我们银河中心的路,是否得经过纪念碑谷? {lamp/}原文:{mtitle title="Road to the Galactic Center"/}Image Credit & Copyright: Michael AbramyanExplanation: Does the road to our galaxy's center go through Monument Valley? It doesn't have to, but if your road does -- take a picture. In this case, the road is US Route 163 and iconic buttes on the Navajo National Reservation populate the horizon. The band of Milky Way Galaxy stretches down from the sky and appears to be a continuation of the road on Earth.Filaments of dust darken the Milky Way, in contrast to billions of bright stars and several colorful glowing gas clouds including the Lagoon and Trifid nebulas. The featured picture is a composite of images taken with the same camera and from the same location -- Forest Gump Point in Utah, USA.The foreground was taken just after sunset in early September during the blue hour, while the background is a mosaic of four exposures captured a few hours later.

(Leonids Over Monument Valley)
顺道一提,你能数出这张主题影像中有多少颗流星吗?{lamp/}原文:{mtitle title="Leonids Over Monument Valley"/}Image Credit & Copyright: Sean M. SabatiniExplanation: There was a shower over Monument Valley -- but not water. Meteors. The featured image -- actually a composite of six exposures of about 30 secondseach -- was taken in 2001, a year when there was a very active Leonids shower. At that time, Earth was moving through a particularly dense swarmof sand-sized debris from Comet Tempel-Tuttle, so that meteor rates approached one visible streak per second. The meteorsappear parallel because they all fall to Earth from the meteor shower radiant -- a point on the sky towards the constellation of the Lion (Leo). The yearly Leonids meteor shower peaks again this week.Although the Moon's glow should not obstruct the visibility of many meteors, this year's shower will peak with perhaps 15 meteors visible in an hour, a rate which is good but not expected to rival the 2001 Leonids. By the way -- how many meteors can you identify in the featured image?

In the featured image taken in 2012, the closest butte on the left and the butte to its right are known as the Mittens, while Merrick Butte can be seen just further to the right.High overhead stretches a band of diffuse light that is the central disk of our spiral Milky Way Galaxy. The band of the Milky Way can be spotted by almost anyone on almost any clear night when far enough from a city and surrounding bright lights.
